A trail camera has captured footage of a Squirrel Glider (Petaurus norfolcensis) between Deeplead and Dadswells Bridge, an area where the Project Platypus team had previously confirmed the species' presence during active surveys.

Following its confirmation, the team installed five nest boxes alongside a trail camera to provide habitat support and monitor ongoing activity in the area. The nest boxes offer critical shelter for a species under significant pressure in Victoria, where Squirrel Gliders are listed as endangered.

Much of the existing data on local Squirrel Glider populations is over 20 years old, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of where these animals are living and in what numbers. Project Platypus' Tail of the Squirrel Glider project is working to change that. In just the last two years, the team has located 15 individuals across the survey area, building a much clearer and more current picture of the local population.
