Kunzea Control in Halls Gap

Protecting the Grampians/Gariwerd National Park from an invasive weed

eWe are partnering with the Halls Gap community to protect the National Park from Kunza (Yarra Burgan), an invasive shrub.

Kunzea (Kunzea leptospermoides, also known as Yarra burgan) was introduced to the Halls Gap area as an ornamental garden plant. It has since spread, forming dense thickets which present a fire hazard, while also threatening native plant biodiversity in the Grampians/Gariwerd National Park. With local community support, this project aims to map the extent of Kunzea, control the infestations and replant where needed with alternative native species.

Unchecked, there is potential for this pest plant to spread from private property into the surrounding National Park. This control program is vital for protecting the biodiversity of the Grampians-Gariwerd.
