Project Platypus is delighted to welcome Honours student Chloe Gherardin, who will be working alongside our team over the coming months as part of her research into squirrel glider habitat use across the Northern Grampians region.
Chloe will survey 15 sites using repeated spotlighting surveys and motion cameras, helping to build a clearer picture of where squirrel gliders are occurring within the fragmented agricultural landscape.
Alongside the surveys, she will examine habitat and landscape characteristics, including canopy cover, hollow-bearing trees and the amount of surrounding native vegetation, to explore what may influence how gliders use these areas.
It is hoped the project will contribute to a better understanding of this isolated squirrel glider population and help inform future conservation efforts in the region.
“I’m really looking forward to getting out in the field and working alongside Project Platypus over the coming months,” Chloe said.
We look forward to sharing updates as the research progresses.
